Older Ethernet standards such as 10Base-T (10 Megabits per second) and 100Base-T (100 Megabits per second) technically only require 2 wire pairs to operate. A vast majority of LAN connections in the home and office environment still run at these speeds since internet connections rarely exceed the 100 Mbps threshold. This means that the use of a regular CAT5e or CAT6 patch cable is overkill because they contain 4 wire pairs -- leaving 2 of those pairs unused. This 2-pair CAT5e patch cable eliminates those unnecessary pairs, thereby reducing the size and weight of the cable.
