{"id":66,"date":"2021-07-01T16:17:13","date_gmt":"2021-07-01T16:17:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cablesondemand.com\/blog\/?p=66"},"modified":"2025-10-03T18:37:26","modified_gmt":"2025-10-03T18:37:26","slug":"question-how-do-i-know-how-many-amps-your-cables-will-handle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cablesondemand.com\/blog\/question-how-do-i-know-how-many-amps-your-cables-will-handle\/","title":{"rendered":"Question:  How Much Current (Amperage) can a Cable Safely Carry Based Upon the Wire Gauge (AWG)?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>This week\u2019s question comes from Rick H. in Iowa:&nbsp;Question: &nbsp;How can I tell what the maximum supported amperage capacity is for your cables?&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cablesondemandblog.com\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/origin.ih.constantcontact.com\/fs110\/1101927195657\/img\/424.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Answer:&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;Thank you for the excellent question Rick! &nbsp;Understanding the voltage and current limits of your cable(s) is absolutely critical to maintaining a safe transfer of electrical power between your devices. &nbsp;All cables feature some degree of resistance to electrical energy. &nbsp;&nbsp;When electricity is forced to flow up against this resistance, it releases energy into the environment in the form of heat. &nbsp;When cables are very thin, i.e. 30 AWG or smaller, the cabling cannot dissipate that heat energy into the environment fast enough, leading to a fundamental breakdown (failure).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The electrical breakdown of a cable assembly is not a pretty sight. During my younger years when my electronics expertise was in its infancy, I once made the horrible mistake of wiring a 12V DC switch incorrectly on a project box. The switch connected a 12V lawn mower battery to a radio transmitter. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Upon engaging the mis-wired switch, the connection created a short circuit between the negative and positive terminals of the battery \u2014 effectively dumping up to 100 Amps of current down some 18 AWG wire. &nbsp;I watched in horror as the wire literally melted from the inside out, causing a flash-fire with the PVC wire insulation melting away like candle wax! &nbsp;The melted wire dripped onto the carpet and nearly started a house fire. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nachi.org\/images10\/blanket_web.jpg\" width=\"423\"><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Example: Electric Blanket Fire<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Fortunately, I was able to disengage the switch quickly before things got even worse, but literally in a matter of seconds, significant damage was done. &nbsp;I learned a hard lesson that day about just how important current-handling capacity can be when it comes to cables. &nbsp;What would happen if a whole bundle of wires ignited and went unnoticed? Besides the fire risk, the burning PVC insulation contains toxic fumes that can prove deadly in their own right.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To prevent disaster, you should always select a cable based on the most conservative of safety ratings in mind. \u00a0The extra margin of error can be a life-saver. \u00a0So what do you need to know first?\u00a0#1:\u00a0\u00a0You Must Know the Wire Gauge (AWG) of the Cable!\u00a0This value is imperative. \u00a0Here at <a href=\"https:\/\/cablesondemand.com\">CablesOnDemand.com<\/a>, we always try to list the wire AWG of our cable assemblies somewhere in the Product Features (Bullets) section on each product detail page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our popular <a href=\"https:\/\/cablesondemand.com\/d-subminiature-d-sub-cables-1\">D-Sub Cables<\/a> for instance tend to use 26 AWG insulated wire in their designs. \u00a0They are often used in custom projects and fed with a variety of both power and signal data.\u00a0 Our <a href=\"https:\/\/cablesondemand.com\/category-5e-cat-5e-ethernet-cables\">CAT5e<\/a> &amp; <a href=\"https:\/\/cablesondemand.com\/category-6-cat-6-ethernet-cables-1\">CAT6<\/a> Ethernet Cables both use 24-AWG wire and our <a href=\"https:\/\/cablesondemand.com\/category-6a-cat-6a-ethernet-cables-1\">CAT6a<\/a> &amp; <a href=\"https:\/\/cablesondemand.com\/category-8-cat-8-ethernet-cables-1\">CAT8<\/a> Cables both use 26-AWG wire. Chassis Wiring:  Running 12V Power for a Car Audio Amplifier<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&nbsp;When a wire is alone and exposed in free-air, we refer to it as:&nbsp;Chassis Wiring&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cablesondemand.com\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"425\" height=\"284\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/cfnewsads.thomasnet.com\/images\/large\/461\/461995.jpg\"><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cablesondemand.com\/\"><\/a><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Example of Power Transmission Wiring (Bundled)<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>When a wire is bundled together with other wires, we call it:&nbsp;Power Transmission Wiring.&nbsp;
